Classification and Application Guide of Surfactants

Surfactants are among the most important product categories in the fine chemical industry, widely known as "industrial MSG." They can significantly alter the surface tension of liquids and play an irreplaceable role in emulsification, dispersion, wetting, foaming, and detergency.

Based on the charge properties of their hydrophilic groups, surfactants are divided into four major categories:

Nonionic Surfactants: Examples include fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ethers and alkylphenol polyoxyethylene ethers. They combine excellent emulsifying, dispersing, and wetting performance, and are unaffected by water hardness—giving them the broadest range of applications.

Amphoteric Surfactants: Examples include betaines. They are mild and low-irritation, commonly used in baby care products and high-end cosmetics.

Surfactant applications cover virtually all industrial and household sectors. In daily chemicals, they are the core cleaning components of shampoos, body washes, and dish soaps. In the textile printing and dyeing industry, surfactants serve as wetting agents, penetrating agents, and leveling agents. In agriculture, they are used as pesticide emulsifiers and synergists. In oil extraction, surfactants are employed to enhance oil displacement efficiency.

When selecting surfactants, factors such as HLB value (Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance), cloud point, and foam performance must be considered comprehensively. Nonionic surfactants are currently the fastest-growing category in market demand due to their strong compatibility and stable performance.
